All we moralists

It was during one of our Macroeconomics classes that the professor remarked, "If you keep aside the interest payment trend that Bush senior adopted, Clinton did a remarkable job. That's why you see all these lines go up in the graph during his period as President. You can't blame him for the past sins committed by others. Of course, he committed a different set of sins". And then the class erupted out in wild laughter. It's perfectly fine to crack a joke like this and it's also fine for everyone to have a good laugh at it. I laughed too. But I didn't like the ridicule filled in the laughter that I saw around. How I wish I was able to do this!

"Sir, if you may permit I would like to take one minute of the air time and talk to the class".
"Sure".
"On a scale of 100, let us subtract 50 points for Clinton for his sin. So, his chastity score is 50. Is that fine with everyone?"

Everyone agrees.

"Now each of you take a piece of paper and write 100 at the top. That's your score. If you've ever gazed at a girl on the road amorously, deduct 10 points. If you've ever dashed into an unknown girl with immoral instincts, subtract 15 points. If you've ever watched porn, take off 20 more points. If you ever fantasized a girl in your imaginations, subtract 25 points. If you had a girlfriend and indulged with her before marriage, subtract 30 points. If you've ever been intimate with any other girl other than your wife, subtract the same 50 points. Anyone who has scored above 50 can laugh now."

The class goes into utter silence.

I was not able to do this in class, but I've a place to tell all that I can't tell elsewhere - my blog!

  2. i think u dont have to be doing the right thing to be commenting about the wrong doings of others... if that were the case, cricket commentators would be hypocrites.. we will be hypocrites while commenting on a bad shot that sreeshant plays.. finally my score is -45.. i am just laughing at myself..

  3. The one thing I don't understand, when I get into conversation with quite a few folks of my age and more, is that they are so fascinated by women for all wrong reasons. These guys pass comments on their dress, behaviour etc. The frusturating thing is that we make it behind their backs.

Whatever progress we make, we still see women for their physical characteristics..No wonder we have them endorsing Laptops!

Part of this is somewhere in the nature that makes men and women attractive to each other. But in our life time, we have terribly overemphasized this attraction in the form of media, entertainment, cinemas and even in casual conversation between males. May be we are not making real progress :(

The choice is whether Matter should rule the mind (or) mind should rule over matter!

  4. For the hypocrite comment above:

I surely agree ... that's why I laughed too and I don't deny I would also crack a joke like this. I don't mind being the target of the joke myself. My only concern was the "ridicule" in the laughter. Have you seen Indians in the US "ridiculing" Indians in India? Not everyone though. Many do it out of genuine concern ... you can see the "care" in the laughter or comment, but some just outright ridicule with pure "contempt". It is the ridicule that I often hate to see. I make fun of people too. And I've a lot to comment too. As you said cricketers are obvious targets, from No. 1 to No. 11 ... politicians - from Prime Minister to MLA ... well, we make fun of Americans too - but I don't think we do it out of contempt always. If it's with contempt, I think we'll have to evaluate.

Again, I don't say anyone who doesn't follow this is a hypocrite, else I'm a hypocrite too. Maybe I'm actually a hypocrite myself. I think I've always been a hypocrite, haha!

For the comment on woman as physical entities:
Worth writing a separate post ... I'm surely not fit to write it right now, maybe after a few more years :)

  5. And thinking about it again - if we've to comment only about things that we're good at ... I should first delete my blog :) But as you said and as I had written in some earlier post, commenting or advising people is like how our parents ask us to become doctors and engineers while they're not one themselves or like we how we might ask our children to become entrepreneurs. Anything out of good will is perfectly fine ... but out of ridicule, I'm not quite sure.
